The George Washington Middle School was recently expanded and remodeled to accommodate the increased enrollment in the Lyons Elementary School District.

Several new classrooms and an art room were included as part of the school’s new south addition.  The existing school building was reconfigured by the relocation of the nurse’s office, the creation of a new Multi-Purpose Room supporting district presentations and assemblies, and the installation of a full preparation kitchen.

Other building improvements include ceiling and lighting upgrades, locker replacements, and improved student resource classrooms.   The new covered main entry provided an improved school image and much needed protection from the weather for students.

As District 170’s architect since 1993, GreenAssociates has worked on multiple improvements to the historic Dixon High School.
The district is proud of the historic nature of the high school and strives to provide improvements that will both preserve the building and improve the learning environment.
Repair and restoration of the tile roof and tuck pointing of exterior masonry have helped preserve the historic character of the school.

The addition of an elevator and improvements to electrical systems have allowed the school to maintain compliance with accessibility and life safety standards.

Marseilles Elementary School District 150’s single school building was flooded in April 2013, when river barges were tore free of their tug and slammed into the town’s dam and levies.  The resulting breach flooded over 200 homes as well as the basement and first level of the school.

GreenAssociates was on site the morning flood waters began to recede.  Working closely with the District’s administration, a plan was developed to assess, coordinate, diagram, and put in place remediation measures for the school.

Clean up and construction work through the summer and fall allowing students to return to their classrooms the third week of January 2014.

District 34 found their population was growing and curriculum changing.  A study, under the leadership of the superintendent and school board, concluded that the district needed additional facilities with an emphasis on early education.

Hillcrest sits on a beautiful but challenging site of changing elevation, wooded areas, and  wetlands.  The  design accommodates the building,   circulation, playing fields, and access while being sensitive to the surroundings.

The design of the school reflects a residential scale in order to make the large building more accessible to the grade-level students it will serve.  The plan is divided into four “houses” or groups of classrooms, an administrative and library area, and a Multi-Purpose Room.

Exterior materials for the building were chosen to be economical, durable, and to reflect the natural materials of the wooded site

Located in suburban DuPage County, Illinois, the Gower School District has long enjoyed stable enrollment and academic success.  Taking positive steps to improve its curriculum and continue as a 21st Century learning center, Gower School District 62 embarked on a renovation and expansion program for their two schools.

Their middle school’s exploratory programs of Industrial Tech, Art, and Consumer Science, along with three Science labs, were enlarged and updated. An auxiliary gym and fitness room were added on the building’s east side by the existing gym and locker rooms. Life safety improvements were made throughout the school.

Gower West, the District’s elementary school, received health life safety improvements.  To better support the District’s academic mission, three of its existing classrooms were renovated and repurposed as two Early Childhood Center classrooms.

To improve the size and quality of classroom and encore spaces, District 70 chose to demolish the aging front section of Highland and rebuild.

The addition follows a similar footprint as the former building, but increases classroom size and corridor width while relocating the main entry and office.

The addition includes 6 classrooms and administration, while renovated spaces include 4 classrooms, 4 science labs, 2 computer labs, art, and theater.

The materials of the front facade tie  the addition to the existing school, and the new canopy provides both a visual focus and a defined entry point.

After years of steady growth and state mandated curriculum changes, McCracken Middle School became overcrowded.  To ease the space crunch, the Board of Education and the community agreed to provide students and teachers with much needed additional teaching and learning spaces.

Blending seamlessly with the existing school building, the new two story addition began in November 2007 and added three science labs, one general use classroom, a multipurpose room, a technology lab, and a space for the school’s instrumental music program.

Students welcome the new space; they can do their science experiments in real working science labs and practice their instruments in a dedicated acoustically tuned space after years of rehearsing in halls and cafeteria.

The Evanston Township High School Student Success Center project was conceived to address several programmatic shortfalls within the school.

In their ongoing commitment to provide 21st century learning environments for their students, the district’s leadership commissioned GreenAssociates to create a central gathering area from existing, underutilized space, for students to use for small group study, homework and socializing.
The project began with a floor to ceiling, wall to wall gutting of 16,000 SF of interior space.  The new area features soft seating and carpeted floors, a beamed ceiling with a cloud shaped multi-layered drop in ceiling grid, glass hall dividers and support offices on its opposite ends.

Five enclosed study centers line one side of the space and four small group meeting areas are arranged near the middle.  The entire space is equipped with WiFi.

Faced with growing enrollment at their two elementary schools, the Mount Prospect School District 57 School Board decided to reopen Westbrook School in 2006 as an Early Education Center.

Phase I of the renovations, included classrooms for the Pre-K program and six kindergarten classrooms. Upgrades included new cabinetry, lighting, flooring and wall finishes. Phase I also included the expansion and renovation of the Learning Center.  The building’s theme of “a garden where children grow” was expanded into a nature themed mural and woodland motif featuring a story area, reading loft, book collection for early learners and flexible platforms.

Phase II improvements included a new entrance,  relocation of administrative offices, renovation of the heating and cooling system, lighting, parking lots and window replacement.

In September 2008, Central Intermediate School, located on a riverbank, flooded and was condemned by the Regional Office of Education.

GreenAssociates assisted the District with immediate temporary classroom space and coordinated the conversion of a shuttered Wal-Mart store into an interim school which was opened in the fall of 2009. In February 2010, the citizens of Ottawa passed a referendum to rebuild Central School.  GreenAssociates continued to work with the Administration and Community in designing the replacement building.

The new school educates 5th and 6th graders in a 2-story 20-classroom wing that includes computer labs, special education lab and classrooms. A library/media center and instructional technology lab support the learning spaces while fine arts are housed in a dedicated art room.  Band and chorus rooms, with practice spaces, support the performing arts. A 2-station gym has bleacher seating for 600, while the cafetorium and stage will accommodate over 650.
